The focus of Trade Aid's work is the town of Mikindani, situated in the southern region of Mtwara - the poorest in Tanzania.
Poverty in Mikindani is endemic. There are very few jobs, no social security system and limited medicines. One out of every five children will not live to see their fifth birthday.
The need in developing countries for mature volunteers, who have professional qualifications and skills such as Accountancy, IT and Teaching has never been greater.
The opportunity to share these skills, knowledge and enthusiasm with those less fortunate is an extraordinary privilege.
Strong cultural links achieved can be a life-changing experience for all concerned..
The variety of projects that involve Trade Aid in Mikindani, means that we have need for volunteers who are Accountants, Hoteliers, IT specialists, or Teachers or those who are trained in Business Management, Marketing and the Tourism Industry.
Our Mature Volunteers go to the projects with a specific skill. They advise and train locally employed staff in that skill. For example, a Hotelier would train the hotel Kitchen, Waiting and Reception staff, an Accountant could work with the Hotel Book-keeper, enabling him to gain skills and confidence in his work. A Small Business Advisor could help local entrepreneurs to produce business plans and organise their accounts.
We believe that by training local people it enables them to find work, support themselves and their families. In this way, we are helping to tackle poverty through Sustainable Employment.
